The Laval-sur-Vologne site is marking two major anniversaries this year: 150 years since the creation of Papeterie Mougeot in 1876, and 18 years since Lucart acquired the tissue activities of Novacare. Rooted in a long industrial tradition, the site now looks ahead with a major new development: the installation of PM15, the fifteenth continuous paper machine acquired by Lucart in its history, which will replace the current PM9.
Supplied by Toscotec, PM15 is designed to be installed while production continues, limiting disruption for customers and the markets served by Laval. Once fully operational, the new machine will increase the site’s overall tissue paper production capacity to 75,000 tonnes per year, including an additional 10,000 tonnes annually. This represents a strategic step forward for the competitiveness and growth of Lucart in France.
The project also marks an important technological and environmental turning point. Equipped with a shoe press to improve energy efficiency and paper quality, PM15 will integrate hybrid hoods capable of operating up to 100% on electricity, together with a high-efficiency Yankee cylinder powered by steam from a new electric boiler. By electrifying part of the thermal process, Lucart will further reduce direct CO₂ emissions from the production line and accelerate its decarbonisation pathway.
Beyond the paper machine itself, the investment includes a major modernisation of the wastewater treatment plant, aimed at improving effluent quality and reducing the site’s environmental impact. Together, these developments demonstrate Lucart’s commitment to combining industrial performance, environmental responsibility and long-term value creation.
The success of such a project depends on close coordination between many teams and partners. Installing one of the most advanced machines in the sector within an operating mill is a major technical, logistical and human challenge, requiring strong collaboration, a shared focus on safety and the ability to maintain service and quality throughout the transition.
For Laval-sur-Vologne, this new chapter reflects both continuity and ambition. Since joining Lucart in 2008, the site has grown significantly, supported by the commitment of its people, innovative investments and the Group’s confidence in its potential. PM15 now stands as a clear signal of the future Lucart wants to build in Laval: more efficient, more sustainable and more competitive.
